The Laboratory for Legal, Political, and Moral Philosophy is based at the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Its Director is Philippos Vassiloyannis, Professor of Philosophy of Law. The Laboratory aims to study systematically the philosophy of law, as well as political philosophy, ethics and related disciplines, and to examine in depth crucial issues in legal theory and practice. The first steps towards the establishment of the Laboratory were taken in the mid-1980s on the initiative of Paul Sourlas, then Assistant Professor of Philosophy of Law and now Emeritus Professor. Informal meetings devoted to the study of texts by classical philosophers were followed by annual rounds of discussions on specific questions and, eventually, by the Seminar of Philosophy of Law. Throughout these activities, the aim has remained the same: to create a forum for sober and careful dialogue on philosophical issues, where ideas and assumptions are critically examined, arguments are exchanged, and positions and opinions are assessed. At the same time, the Laboratory seeks to foster a living community of researchers, united by their interest in the philosophy of law, political philosophy, ethics, and related disciplines. In the context of the Seminar of Philosophy of Law, conferences and workshops are organized, along with lectures by eminent philosophers and legal theorists. Papers are also presented and discussed, with discussion serving as a first test of work that may subsequently be published as articles in the philosophical journal Isopoliteia. Finally, particular attention is devoted to supporting doctoral candidates in the successful completion of their dissertations and to promoting the dissemination of their research.
